This is the competency
that I feel the most unsure about. I have been a part of many interviews, many discussions on retaining certain personnel, and several union meetings and votes. I've also been on the Minnesota Charter Association Relicensure Committee where we decided if people submitted enough correct information to be relicensed. But I have never had to let someone go. I have yet to decide if there has been a breach of contract or a violation of union decree. I imagine that many parts of this competency involve Law and Policy. One part of the process of retention I have been a part of is the formal observations. I was in charge of observing 8 teachers twice a year and providing formal feedback. Most teachers did very proficient lessons, but there was one teacher who continually said and did things in class that caused concern. I felt it my ethical duty to bring the issue up with the admin at the time. It turns out the admin had already decided on their own that this teacher was not going to be renewed. The awkward point was the teacher then asked me to be a reference and write a referral. This was not the first referral nor the last, but I did my best to convey her strengths and her positives. I believe in second chances, even if they have to be somewhere else. |
